Admission Decisions
Grand Valley State University uses a holistic admission review to evaluate each applicant within the context of their individual journey, opportunities, and challenges. We consider academic preparation and achievement alongside personal characteristics, experiences, and potential for success at GVSU. This approach helps us build a diverse, engaged student body that strengthens the learning experience for all Lakers.
When reviewing applications, GVSU may consider:
- Academic performance and overall GPA, including course rigor and preparation for intended major
- GPA trends throughout high school
- Secondary school record, including courses taken and grades earned
- Personal data submitted on the application
- Standardized test scores when provided (SAT/ACT not required for domestic undergraduate applicants)
- Involvement in school, community, or leadership activities
- Service, employment, achievements, or special talents
- Personal statements, essays, or other supporting materials
- Transcripts from any previously attended institutions
GVSU follows a rolling admission policy, reviewing applications as they become complete. For freshmen entering the Fall semester, a completed application and all supporting documents should be submitted by March 1 for merit scholarship consideration. Final scholarship decisions are made by July 31.
Below you’ll find the admission requirements and application instructions for undergraduate students. Use the tabs to review what materials you need to submit, how we review your application, and any key deadlines that may apply to you. Be sure to select the student type that best describes you so you see the most accurate information.
- Complete the online application. A paper application is also available, and should be mailed to: Admissions Office, Grand Valley State University, 1 Campus Drive, Allendale, MI 49401.
- Request an official transcript from your high school. To be considered official, transcripts must be sent from your school counselor or designated official, or requested through an electronic delivery service such as Parchment, Naviance, or SCOIR. Official transcripts can be emailed to [email protected].
- Consider sending your ACT or SAT test results. The decision to submit test scores will be left up to the applicant. All applicants admitted to GVSU by March 1 for a Fall start date will be considered for merit-based scholarships, regardless of whether or not test scores are submitted with the application. After admitted, you may continue to submit official test scores as a supplement to your application until July 31 for additional scholarship consideration. When you take the test, list Grand Valley as one of the recipients of your scores. GVSU's school code for the ACT is 2005 and for the SAT is 1258. If you are aiming for our top scholarships you must provide your test scores for consideration. Additionally, if you are seeking to showcase strong math proficiency we encourage you to submit your test scores.
