  • Each college at GVSU has an academic advising center that serves specific majors in that college. If you have specific questions about program requirements, you could contact the advising center to seek additional information.

  • Our Career Center provides comprehensive support and resources for all students at GVSU. It is recommended that you connect with the counselors there as soon as you transition to GVSU.
  • The Career Guides by Major allow students to investigate possible career or graduate/professional school opportunities based on specific programs of study.

Advising Notes for Transfer Guides:

 

  • Art electives should be selected from: ART 151, 152, 161, 162, 181, 191, 221, or VCA 125
  • Degrees Offered at GVSU’s Department of Visual Media Arts (VMA): Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art, Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Studio Art, Film Video Production, Photography, Art Education (K-12) or Art History.   
  • Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree must demonstrate a third semester proficiency in a foreign language either through completing the courses or via placement test taken at GVSU.
  • Bachelor of Science students should take the courses introductory statistics and introductory computing.  Additional coursework may be required upon transfer to GVSU. Please check the VMA website for more specific information.
  • For the BFA students, an emphasis in one of the following areas is required: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture or Visual Studies. The BFA is an 81-credit major that includes 27 credits of electives taken outside of the chosen emphasis.

  • Visual and Media Arts also offers minors in Art History, Photography, Film Video Production, Studio Art
  • Additional advising information provides further context and detail regarding all the majors and minors offered by VMA.

  • Transfer students will be awarded transfer credit for specific courses based on the work completed at their previous institution. Specific course equivalencies can be found on the Michigan Transfer Network or the GVSU Equivalency database.
