The diagnostic medical sonography program at Grand Valley State University is a comprehensive 21-month cohort program that begins each fall. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to perform ultrasound procedures, interpret sonographic images, and assist in medical diagnoses across various specialties, including emergency medicine, pediatrics, and oncology.
The curriculum is designed for students who have completed two years of general education and prerequisite courses. Students in this program will study essential topics like physiology, pathophysiology, and sonographic specialties. The curriculum includes both lecture-based and hands-on lab courses, ensuring that you gain crucial experience with sonographic techniques and protocols. Advanced courses focus on areas like abdominal and obstetric-gynecologic sonography, preparing you for diverse clinical settings and real-world challenges.
GVSU offers the only baccalaureate-level sonography program in Michigan, with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and experienced faculty who are actively practicing in the field. Small class sizes and clinical rotations at multiple physician offices and hospitals ensure personalized instruction and diverse clinical experiences. Before graduation, you are qualified to take national board registries through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, enabling you to become a board-registered sonographer immediately upon completing the program.
Admission to the diagnostic medical sonography program is a competitive process that requires a secondary application. Please contact the College of Health Professions for the secondary application package, which can also be found at www.gvsu.edu/dms/.
