Allied Health Sciences is a field encompassing a variety of health care professions focused on supporting patient care, diagnosis, and treatment. Histotechnologists cut, mount, and stain surgically removed tissues to make cell details visible for review and to help pathologists and physicians make accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
This program provides students with a thorough understanding of histotechnology, a laboratory science focused on the demonstration of cellular morphology, chemical composition, and function of normal and abnormal tissue. Students complete 96 credits at Grand Valley State University and participate in a 47-week clinical practicum at William Beaumont Hospital's nationally accredited histotechnology program. This combination of academic and practical training prepares graduates for careers in medical laboratories, research institutions, and healthcare facilities.
You will study a variety of courses, including introductory medical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, and specialized histotechnology courses. These courses cover essential topics such as tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining techniques. The hands-on clinical experiences allow you to apply your knowledge in real-world settings, gaining valuable skills and insights into the histotechnology field.
The histotechnology emphasis at Grand Valley State University offers access to state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated faculty who are experts in the field. The program's strong connections with the regional medical community provide high-quality clinical opportunities, enhancing your educational experience and career prospects.
Accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
