Override Requests / Permits
Current State
Currently override requests / permits (pre-requisite, co-requisite, closed class, attribute, capacity, etc.) are requested by students and approved by faculty via a Banner workflow. Overrides may also be applied preemptively by faculty and professional advisors.
Future State
Students will use the Request Course Section Pre-Requisite Override task in Workday for any override request / permit. Departmental approvers will need to pull a report to identify approvals needed. Overrides may still be applied preemptively by faculty or professional advisors except for capacity overrides.
When Will This Change Take Effect?
Override requests and approvals will begin in Workday for courses in the Fall 2027 semester and beyond. Requests/approvals may start as soon as students begin registering for these courses in March 2027.
Who Will Be Impacted?
Students, Faculty, Professional Advisors, Unit Heads
Potential Challenges
- Colleges will need to filter the report to the courses for which they need to approve overrides. They will also need to monitor that overrides are being addressed in a timely manner.
- Capacity overrides will no longer be available. Instead, facilitating registration into a closed class will be accomplished through waitlist promotion, or by working with the Registrar's office to increase the class capacity or administratively register the student.
Other Important Information
- Departmental approvers will use the 'GVSU - Prerequisite Override Requests Awaiting Review' report. They will also use the 'Maintain Registration Restriction Overrides for Students' task to grant the token.
- Academic Override Requests (substitutions and waivers) will continue to be sent via email to the Records Office, [email protected], for processing. These will need to be submitted for variable-credit courses, projects, internships, practica, or similar requirements that have a credit range when the credits are greater than the minimum credit. Additionally, these courses may appear in academic history rather than on the APR.
