Never Attended Record-Keeping
Current State
When students never attend a class they are registered for, faculty assign an F grade to the student in Banner and are instructed to enter the first day of the semester as the student’s Last Date of Academic Activity (LDAA).
Future State
When students never attend a class, instead of entering a grade of F, the faculty member will enter a grade of F-Never Attended (for a letter-graded class) or NC-Never Attended (for a CR/NC class). The grade will still appear as an F or an NC on the student's transcript.
When Will This Change Take Effect?
The Fall semester of 2027 is the first semester that faculty will enter grades in Workday and be able to select the “Never Attended” option.
Benefits
- Allows differentiation in reporting for students who never attended versus those who did attend and received an F grade
- Provides the opportunity for Academic Advising to better understand and respond to students receiving an F grade
- Improves financial aid compliance
Decision Making
The following groups have been consulted for input on this decision in addition to the Workday Student Sponsors and Steering Committee.
- Workday Student Academic Affairs Advisory Group
- Peer institutions: Teams polled peer institutions on their current practice and found that there is not a “normal practice” in Michigan, and it comes down to campus culture and preference.
