DESCRIPTION

Volunteer at the Academic Majors Fair and share what it's like to work in your particular field. The Academic Majors Fair is an opportunity for undecided students to explore a variety of degrees and career paths before declaring a major. Each major offered at GVSU will be represented with a table staffed by faculty who teach in that discipline along with an alumni volunteer who works in that field. Our students relate especially well to individuals who have been in their shoes and can speak about career paths based on real-world experience.

You need not necessarily have majored in your current line of work to participate. Volunteers may select to work one, two, or all three hours of the fair.

DATE: Wednesday, November 7
TIME: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
LOCATION: Kirkhof Center, Grand River Room (No. 16 on Allendale Campus map)
MAP: 1 Campus Dr, Allendale, MI 49401

Womens Resource Center

Computer Literacy Trainers and other volunteer opportunities available with Grand Rapids Women’s Resource Center

The Grand Rapids Women’s Resource Center equips and empowers women to become economically self-sufficient and improve their lives through meaningful employment, career development and personal growth.

We offer both intensive, holistic programs and ala carte services that include career exploration, employment guidance, employability and life skills classes, one-on-one coaching, volunteer/peer mentoring, support groups, and a clothing closet to help women dress for success.

Any unemployed or under-employed woman living in the Greater Grand Rapids area can find assistance at WRC.

Computer Classes are offered to participants who are interested in improving their computer skills. In addition to offering regularly scheduled  Word and Excel classes, we also provide opportunities for 1-on-1 tutoring time for any MS application.  Classes are small, 2-8 individuals. Volunteers teach these classes in 2 hour blocks. These volunteers must be proficient in these programs but also have the heart of a teacher and the ability  and desire to work with people from different backgrounds and with varying levels of computer skills.

Career Internship

The expression, “people hire people” may seem simple, but it’s never been truer than in today’s job market. One of the best ways to meet these people is at the GVSU Fall Career & Internship Fair. This event features over 220 organizations from all industries, looking to hire students of all academic disciplines. At this fair you’ll be able to:

-         Meet professionals from your field(s) of interest

-         Find internship and/or job opportunities (thousands will be available!)

-         Research and ask questions of potential future employers

If you need an internship or job in the next year, plan to be at the Fall Career & Internship Fair! Haven’t been to a career fair before? Check out our prep events How to Talk to Employers, Suit Up!, and Telling Your Story to learn what to do, say, wear, and prepare. You can also stop by our CareerLab to get your resume reviewed (CareerLab runs 11am – 4pm Monday – Friday in 101B DeVos and 206 STU). Resume printing is also available at the Career Center for only 10 cents a page.

A number of employers will be on campus the following day for Next Day Interviews. While these interviews are by invite only, you may want to keep Wednesday, October 17 open should you be invited to participate.

The Fall Career Fair is Tuesday, October 16 from 1 – 5pm at the DeVos Convention Center, 303 Monroe in downtown Grand Rapids. Parking is available – for a fee – in one of the Grand Rapids city lots, or take the 50 for no cost. It will drop you off right in front of the Convention Center!

See you there! #GVCareerFair
