Nelson Van Elderen

Professional Journey Quick Facts:

  • Took a job with Standard Lumber and Kitchens after graduation in 1975 and stayed there for 31 years in various roles.
  • Received my MBA from Seidman in 1994 and got involved with the new Seidman Alumni Association at that time.
  • I started teaching as an Adjunct at Seidman in 2006 and have continued teaching in the marketing department as an adjunct, a visiting instructor, and as an affiliate. I'm currently an adjunct.

Where are you from?

Born in Grand Rapids, now live in Cedar Springs, MI

What do you do for fun?

In my spare time I enjoy music. I play guitar in an acoustic trio called "The Now and Then Band" and enjoy listening to music of all types. I also like to golf and watch sports. I am an amateur radio operator. The thing that makes me the happiest is spending time with my family and watching the two grandsons grow up.

Nelson's Advice

"Stay connected with Seidman, there are many opportunities to do that such as becoming involved with the Alumni Network, volunteering in the student mentor program, attending Seidman events, etc.  If you just graduated, wait a few years and then come back for an MBA degree."

What has been the most significant professional outcome that came as a result of your GVSU degree from Seidman College?
It enabled me to become a teacher at the university Level.

If you could learn one new professional skill, what would it be and why?
I would like to learn how to operate a recording studio. I have always been fascinated by technology and love music, so running a recording studio would combine both. 

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
You can't learn less.

If you could pick any job, what would it be?
Bullpen catcher for the Detroit Tigers
