Seidman Alumni Board Spotlight - Greta Robbins

Greta Robbins

How has Seidman had a role in your professional journey?
The Seidman College of Business has had a massive role in my professional journey! The involvement of being in organizations while in my undergrad is what allowed me to get internship experience during school and introduced me to my new role post-graduation.

The SCB helped by promoting the organizations on campus - Delta Sigma Pi, IPO, AMA, etc., and making those a priority for the spotlight and school resources. These organizations gave professional knowledge and introductions that otherwise would not have been made. Now, in my professional career, SCB helps by giving me a network of alumni for mentorship and support.

When did you graduate?

Where are you from?

I grew up in a small town right outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan - (No, I am not a crazy Michigan fan, just a normal one). Grand Valley brought me over to the west side where I lived in Allendale/Grand Rapids for school. I recently just moved to Charlotte, North Carolina for a new role. I lived directly south of the city right below the business hub. Lots of young lively people, dog walking, breweries, and fun weekend activities!

What do you do for fun?

I spend lots of my spare time socializing with others! I am an extrovert so this gives me energy and makes me happy.  Being that I am a more recent alumni I do not have a spouse or kids, so I spend time socializing with friends going out to eat, for coffee, going to watch a game in downtown Charlotte, or being outside. I am also active in my church. I stay involved with the children's ministry and have a weekly bible study with friends.

Greta's Advice

"Never stop learning! As an early career person, you never know what opportunities will be presented to you or where the course of your career could go. With that, be sure to stay curious so you are always being directed in a sense of your likes/dislikes and strengths/weaknesses to learn what fulfills you and how you make impact."

Tell Us More...

What has been the most significant professional outcome that came as a result of your GVSU degree from Seidman College?
The most significant outcome as a result of my Grand Valley degree were the connections and mentors I had coming out of Grand Valley. Taking advantage of the small class sizes allowed me to get to know my peers, professors, and their networks. Through my organizational involvement, I also was exposed to additional professional resources that other students may not have had. The connections and resources I had were significant results of my degree.

If you could learn one new professional skill, what would it be and why?
I would say I am proficient in this skill and improving, but nowhere NEAR an expert. If I could be 100% flawless at a professional skill it would be effectively communicating thoughts and information to each audience I interact with throughout the day.  As I progress in my career, the importance of explaining my thoughts so everyone can best understand them I have learning is critical for any engagement, let alone a successful one.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Be attentive and always show a genuine interest to those you interact with - make everyone feel like a "someone".

If you could pick any job, what would it be?
Restaurant / coffee shop tester
