High school students explore accounting careers

About 15 area high school students are learning what it's like to be a certified public accountant, a tax accountant or an internal auditor.

The students are attending a week-long Accounting Careers Awareness camp at Grand Valley, hosted by the School of Accounting in the Seidman College of Business.

The camp runs from June 17-21 on the Allendale Campus, giving students the opportunity to stay in the living centers on campus.

Students will make site visits to area accounting firms and corporations including Plante Moran, Crowe LLP and Gordon Food Service.

"A degree in accounting opens the doors to opportunities in the private and public sector," said David Cannon, assistant professor of accounting. "Our graduates are in high demand for roles in public accounting, internal and information systems auditing, and corporate accounting and finance."
