Integrated Science
Students who choose the integrated science concentration will take a course in genetics for preservice teachers, as well as a chemistry course, and a course in teaching science in the 21st century. Faculty teaching these courses are scientists with expertise in teaching science. They conduct research in science teaching, write and publish science curriculum (often with undergraduate student collaborators), serve as leaders in state and national educational initiatives and organizations, and have earned honors and awards at all levels.
WHY SCIENCE?
The National Science Teachers Association student chapter is a GVSU club that meets for professional development and travel to state, regional, and national conferences. By choosing a concentration in Integrated Science, you will be positioning yourself to be a leader in the sciences at your school.
COURSE
The Integrated Science concentration requires 9 credits of science courses across several disciplines.
- BIO 205: Genetics for PK – 3 Preservice Teachers
- CHM 201: Introduction to Chemical Sciences
- SCI 495: Teaching Science in the 21st Century*
*Indicates course that is often, but not always, offered during Spring/Summer semesters
GVSU Science Clubs
GVSU Biology Club
The GVSU Biology Club aims to help students build relationships with their biology faculty and classmates. Throughout the school year, the club gives students a chance to interact with the community through various events. We also encourage and provide students with opportunities in various careers and research opportunities in biology-related fields. The Biology Club is open to any majors; only an interest in biology is required.
GVSU Wildlife Society Club
GVSU’s student chapter of The Wildlife Society is one of the newer clubs at Grand Valley to offer hands-on experiences for those passionate about the outdoors and the wildlife that resides there. This organization focuses on giving students crucial out-of-the-classroom experiences that will benefit future career development and endeavors. Constructing wood duck boxes, habitat restoration projects, and networking with wildlife professionals from around the state are just a few of the ways The Wildlife Society offers both a practical and professional skillset to set you apart from others upon graduation. Come have fun with us, where the Wildlife is the good life!
The purpose of this organization shall be to provide a more cohesive social environment for CMB students interested in science and research. Specifically, to create a more informed community of student researchers regarding program requirements, professional development, academics, and extracurricular activities.
Members should be interested in or involved in Biochemistry or Cell and Molecular Biology.
Grand Valley Chemistry Club connects students with classmates and faculty through educational and social events. Events held in previous years include Chemistry at The Mall, Student and Faculty Game Night, Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream, Exam Cram & many more! We also help get students involved in research, REU's, and volunteering. As an American Chemical Society (ACS) affiliate, we provide valuable benefits to members, including funding opportunities for national meetings and networking opportunities. There are no mandatory meetings or fees. We are open to all majors! We usually meet every other Tuesday at 6 pm; keep an eye out for posts on social media and email communications.
