Grade-Band Emphasis
As a PCKET major, you will choose a grade-band emphasis in pre-kindergarten through third grade (PK-3), third through sixth grade (3-6), or a dual grade-band emphasis in prekindergarten through sixth grade (PK-6). These emphases are based on the grade-band teaching certifications you can earn in the state of Michigan. We recommend that all PCKET majors choose the PK-6 dual grade-band emphasis so you can be hired to teach both lower and upper elementary. Students who choose the 3-6 or PK-6 emphasis and prepare to teach only General Education must also choose a concentration in English, math, science, or social studies. A concentration comprises a small number of courses to improve your content knowledge of a particular subject area. Honors students, and students who opt for an ESL, Spanish, or special education endorsement do not need a concentration.
Concentrations & Endorsements
Content-Area Concentrations
For the 3-6 grade band, you can focus on a 9-credit concentration in English, math, science, or social studies to gain deeper content knowledge for teaching upper elementary students.
Endorsements
An endorsement demonstrates specialized knowledge beyond your initial teaching certificate. Adding an endorsement like ESL or Spanish to your elementary certification gives you more flexibility and broader career options.
