Math
The mathematics concentration in your PCKET major prepares you to teach mathematics with depth, confidence, and responsiveness—at all elementary grades. We have designed the courses to intentionally integrate mathematics content, pedagogy, and practice. This means, you don’t just study math and how to teach math—you learn mathematics through experience, reflection, and interactions with children The math concentration strengthens and builds on the knowledge you gained from your math PCKET courses where defining feature of our math coursework is early and sustained field experiences. We do not wait until your apprenticeship semester to connect coursework to classrooms. Our approach to learning ensures you graduate with extensive classroom experience and a strong bridge between theory and practice.
Choose a math concentration to:
- Deepen your mathematical understanding for teaching, with focused coursework in geometry and measurement (MTH 322), data, probability, and statistics (MTH 323), and algebraic reasoning and proportional thinking (MTH 324) all with significant time teaching children.
- Expand your understanding of how children think about mathematics, studying learning progressions, common misconceptions, and the strategies children use to make sense of mathematical ideas and further your teaching by eliciting and using student thinking, learning how to ask purposeful questions, analyze student work, and use formative assessment to guide instruction.
- Work directly with children in local elementary schools to apply your learning immediately in real classrooms, where content and pedagogy are tightly connected to elementary teaching. Gain confidence and skill as you plan, teach, and reflect on mathematics lessons with elementary students.
WHY THIS CONCENTRATION?
Teachers with strong mathematics preparation are leaders in their schools. A math concentration positions you to support colleagues, contribute to curriculum decisions, and advocate for high-quality mathematics instruction. Graduates of the program are well prepared to take on leadership roles related to math teaching and learning.
COURSE
The Math concentration requires 9 credits of math courses.
- MTH 322: Geometry for Elementary Teachers
- MTH 323: Probability and Statistics for Elementary Teachers
- MTH 324: Algebra for Elementary Teachers
Expand Your Credentials to teach math in Grades 5-9
Students in the PCKET PK–6 or 3–6 major with a math concentration can add a Mathematics Teaching Minor (see Mathematics with Middle Grades Teacher Certification (Grades 5-9) with as few as four additional courses, leading to certification to teach mathematics in grades 5–9. This option allows you to broaden your teaching credentials while building on coursework you are already completing.
