Each student-athlete at GVSU is paired with an Athletic Academic Advisor who works specifically with their team. Your advisor is here to support you from your first day on campus through summer classes and beyond.
They’ll meet with you regularly to check in on your academic progress, help you stay organized, and offer support outside of your sport. Whether you need help planning your class schedule around practices or figuring out how to stay on track for graduation, your advisor is your go-to resource for academic success.
If you’ve already declared a major, you’ll want to connect with your major advisor for the most up-to-date information on classes and course planning.

After the first week of classes and athletic hold goes onto every student athletes account, this prevents changes to your current semester that would render you ineligible. If you need to remove the hold for any reason or have questions, please connect with an athletics academic advisor to make changes to your schedule.

Navigate is your hub for appointments, and any advising related alerts. Check out the tutorial under Advising Support to set up a meeting with a major advisor.
GVSU SAVE is a program that gives you discounted digital access to your course materials through Blackboard. If your class uses GVSU SAVE, you’ll automatically be billed for the materials and your textbooks will be available in Blackboard before the semester starts.
✅ How to access your materials:
- Look for the GVSU SAVE link inside your Blackboard course (in the Content area).
- Click on Course Materials to open the VitalSource page and view your textbooks.
- If you have trouble finding the link, reach out to your instructor.
🚫 Want to opt out?
You can opt out before the semester’s deadline and get a full refund. (The semester's deadline usually falls 1-2 weeks into the semester)
Here's how:
- Check your GVSU email for a Welcome to GVSU SAVE email.
- In that email, click View GVSU SAVE Course Materials to manage access.
- You’ll see a list of your courses—select Opt Out for any GVSU SAVE course.
- Or, go to the GVSU Choose site (where you normally select textbooks), click Manage Access, and enter your G#. You’ll get an email with a link to the opt-out option.

Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is a form of Supplemental Instruction available in some historically challenging courses. With SLA, students attend a required additional weekly session led by a peer facilitator that reviews course content, clarifies lecture points, and provides study, test-taking, and reading strategies.
SLA focuses on collaboration and interaction to help students practice course content in a fun, low-stakes environment.

Every semester, the Laker Academic Center offers Impact Series presentations, with the goal of helping student-athletes "succeed academically by providing them with the necessary tools and exposing them to knowledge that will help them adjust to life after college."
The list of events are updated throughout each semester as we solidify speakers and locations for events. Check back regularly to see when new events will be hosted.

Our staff will send out a blanket statement to all faculty who will have student-athletes missing from their classes.
However, student-athletes are still responsible for communicating early with their professors AND getting accommodations for any work that may be missed.
Our office focuses on academic advising and helping student-athletes stay on track for graduation.
If you're a junior or senior and have compliance questions related to your academic plan—like graduating on time or extending your eligibility to match your academic goals—please reach out to Kate Hagenbuch ([email protected]).

Student-Athletes NEED to keep track of their own study table hours, we send out automated reports Monday and Thursday mornings with updated hour counts.
