Athletics Academic Advising Handouts
Why This Matters:
Week 2/3 is all about creating structure for your semester. Assignments, practices, and deadlines are starting to pile up, which means is the perfect time to get organized and make a plan.
Time Management Basics
- Start by setting priorities: What needs to be done first?
- Break big projects into smaller steps and add important dates to your calendar as soon as you know about them. Staying ahead now saves stress later.
- Pick a day of the week to sit down and write out all assignments and plan time to complete everything.
Planners That Work
Planners aren’t one-size-fits-all. Choose what works best for you! Monthly, weekly, or daily formats are all fine—the key is to stay consistent and use it.
Here's some examples of planners:
- Physical Planner
- Whiteboard
- Digital Planners: Notion, Google Calendar, myHomework, Reminders

Resource Spotlight
In our meetings we talked about the importance of keeping track of long term events for your sport in addition to assignments, papers, and exams that are from your classes. The tutoring center has semester long calendars for both semesters with two different formats: Monday Start & Sunday Start.

Feel free to print these, fill them out and hang them up next to your desk!
On-Campus Support
Don’t do it all alone! Success Coaches are available to meet through the Student Academic Success Center (SASC) to help you build better study habits, manage your schedule, and stay organized throughout the semester.
Why This Matters:
Office hours are meant to build relationships with your professors and ask questions. Try to think about office hours as a ‘check-in’, even if you don’t need immediate support, say hello and spark conversation about the course you’re in! Additionally, review your note taking methods... the Cornell Notes method is a simple structure that helps you stay organized, review more effectively, and boost your memory. If you take notes on your laptop, Notability is another great resource to add to your toolkit!
Key Deadlines:
- September 19 @ 5pm – Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) Deadline
Why Go to Office Hours?
Office hours give you time for personalized help on topics, a chance to make up missed quizzes or exams, and an opportunity to learn more about careers in your field. They’re also a great way to build connections with your instructors, which can be used to network and gain more insight into topics or your desired career path.

Emailing Your Professors
Sometimes you can’t make it to office hours—and that’s okay! Here’s how to email professors respectfully:
- Use a clear subject line (e.g., “Class Name: Section Number - Question about Homework #2”)
- Start with a greeting (“Hello Professor Smith,”)
- Clearly state your question or issue politely and get to the point
- Sign off with your full name, class, and section
