After completing her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in biomedical sciences at Grand Valley, Shatoya ’15, ’18, decided to pursue a second bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science.

With two semesters left in her program, Shatoya learned that she exhausted all of her Federal Student Aid. She needed to find another way to pay for tuition.

“I ran out of financial aid. I was working full time, but I also had to pay my bills and living expenses. I didn’t have the income to pay for tuition out of pocket,” she said.

Shatoya started applying for scholarships, but found there weren’t many options for students her age and in her program. Then Shatoya became aware of the Student Support Fund.

“I was questioning if I could afford my last two semesters. If I didn’t have the help of the Student

Support Fund, I would be dropping out so close to the finish line,” she said.

Thanks to the Student Support Fund, Shatoya can focus on her last academic year and worry less about her finances.

“I’m just so grateful to the donors of the Student Support Fund. Thank you for helping me continue as a Laker,” said Shatoya.

Shatoya will complete her degree in 2022, and plans to advance her career as a laboratory scientist.
