Indie Sobiech, Class of 2024

What is your major and when do you expect to graduate?
I am studying in the non-thesis biomedical science program, and I will be graduating in winter 2024.

How did you find out about the opportunity to study at GVSU?
I found out about the opportunity to study at GVSU through a meeting hosted at Saint Augustine's University with Dean Plotkowski and Vice President Truss from Grand Valley. I was a senior at the time trying to figure out my next step after finishing my undergrad. Both Dean Plotkowski and VP Truss told me that they would fly me out to Michigan to see what GVSU has to offer.

What was your first reaction to the idea of coming here and why did you, ultimately, decide to come?
When I visited GVSU in November of 2021, I was blown away by the beautiful campus, the speech center, the laboratories, and the opportunities GVSU clearly displayed in the biomedical science program. I was unsure of what exactly I wanted to do in the science field, but I knew that GVSU had the perfect program to help me figure out what I aspire to be. The opportunity to study debt free also added to GVSU being my next step.

What has your experience been like at Grand Valley so far? What is the highlight?
My experience at Grand Valley has been nothing but amazing. The highlight of my experience has to be the faculty of the BMS program. They have been pushing me to be the best that I can be from the first day of classes. Even on days when I felt lost or discouraged, they have shown me different avenues to make it through. Another highlight is my cohort in the program. We stick together and ensure that everyone can be successful for each class.

What do you hope to do after graduation?
I plan to earn my PhD in pharmacology and become a pharmacologist.

Is there anything else you think donors should know about how this experience has helped you move toward your goals?
GVSU is the reason that I discovered that I want to be a pharmacologist. Grand Valley has allowed me to open my eyes to know that opportunities are always available even when you think there aren't any.
