First Year Student Support

How will students and faculty members be matched for mentoring?

Brian: For our first year we are using the transitions organizational plan to recruit students into the mentoring program. We will then pair Faculty and Student advocates to these groups.  At this time it is not a 1:1 pairing but rather a group of 10 students to 1 faculty member. Additionally, we will develop intervention groups based on survey’s assessing connectedness and other factors we know lead to lack of retention.  Then finally we’ll create other groups after midterm grades come out to be targeted at those students who need extra assistance at that point.

Will there be any support after the first year?

Brian: The goal of this program is to support in the first year. However, with that being said we expect for this support to continue in that we’ve educated them on the campus resources available and otherwise provided opportunities for them to connect with other groups and students through this experience in the first year.

What type of things will you be doing to help first year students succeed?

Brian: We will provide students with a faculty member who is dedicated to assisting them through this time. We will provide training sessions for those in the Student Success Network (SSN), but the program will offer several meetings with the individual students to provide them with resources, social opportunities, and otherwise connecting them to their faculty and peers.

When will the program begin?

Brian: The program will begin this fall of 2018.

What are you most excited about with this program?

Brian: I'm most excited to provide this type of resource to students and hope that with support we can grow the program annually and have an option to support incoming students across the board in the future.
