Graduate Assistantship Information
The College of Computing has started the GA hiring process for Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 by posting a job opening in Workday. You may submit your interest and application materials at that time.
In the College of Computing, GAs are awarded to exceptional students to support their academic career and allow students the opportunity to support faculty research. Most GAs are awarded in the Winter semester (March/April) and cover one academic year, with a performance review at the end of the Fall semester.
If you are interested in being considered for a Computing GA position, you should look for GA positions on the GVSU Workday webpage. Only admitted students are eligible (incoming students do not have to be enrolled at the time they apply and can accept a GA before arrival. Once at GVSU, a student must be enrolled to begin their GA).
Expectations
- A full-time GA is expected to work 20 hours per week.
- A half-time GA is expected to work 10 hours per week.
- GAs are expected to assist faculty members with their research.
- New GAs must attend a mandatory GA orientation hosted by the Graduate School.
Selection Criteria
- All graduate students in any Computing graduate program are eligible to be selected as a GA.
- Priority is given to students who are enrolled in a master thesis or research project with a faculty member.
Another website to check for Graduate Assistantships is the Graduate School's webpage; other departments and colleges at GVSU will have their own positions listed to which you can apply.
For Current and Incoming GAs
Orientation. All Computing GAs must attend a mandatory orientation provided by the Graduate School at GVSU. Furthermore, all GAs must attend a mandatory orientation provided by the College of Computing. The slides from the last orientation are available for those interested in more details. The Graduate School also has a page of information and resources.
Tracking Work Hours. GA’s are expected to track their hours and share it with their supervisor. A sample spreadsheet is shared during New GA Orientation, but supervisors can make their own. GA’s do not have to submit their hours on Workday or to the Graduate School.
Sick Time. GA’s earn one hour of sick time (abbreviated ESTA for the Earned Sick Time Act) for every 30 hours that they work, up to 10 days a semester for a full time GA. When you are sick and unable to work, you may use any accumulated hours. If you miss more hours than you have earned, then you are expected to make up the difference. You may see your sick time balance and make sick time requests in Workday.
Vacation. GA’s do not have vacation or paid time off.
