If you are interested in becoming a member of the Young Alumni Council (YAC) please read and complete the following application. Applications must be returned to Alumni Relations via email or mail. To be considered for the upcoming fiscal year (July – June), applications must be submitted by May 31 of said year. Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered for the following term year.
The YAC of Grand Valley State University was formed in May 2008 by a pioneering group of young alumni, in conjunction with the Alumni Relations office. The YAC is organized by the Grand Valley State University Alumni Association and shall be guided by the Bylaws.
The YAC strives to promote the mission, vision, and values of Grand Valley State University, and the Grand Valley State University Alumni Association, while serving the unique needs of the Young Alumni population in West Michigan. The YAC works closely with the Alumni Association to engage in relevant and meaningful programs and services for current and future young alumni, and to foster lifelong participation and philanthropic support.
The YAC exists to encourage and maintain the relationship between young alumni, and the University, fostering active involvement and helping to develop future volunteers and leaders. The YAC stresses participation in other areas of University life and members of the YAC hold spots on the Alumni Association Board, as well as at-large roles on the Alumni Association Awards Committee, to help select the young alumni award winners.
The YAC plans four (4) main events per year specifically for young alumni, with a balance between educational, social, networking, sporting, and community service offerings. Additional social and networking events may also take place intermittently. Each event is purposeful, providing opportunities for personal and professional growth, and designed to meet the professional, educational, social, and philanthropic needs of attendees while ensuring quality and excellence. Events will advocate for the needs and concerns of young alumni.
The YAC and Alumni Association recognize the important role young alumni play at GVSU. The YAC works to promote its programs and events and Alumni Association benefits, in order to engage and serve a greater number of young alumni.
During their time on the YAC, members are required to actively contribute to the university financially ($100 minimum, annually) and through involvement and attendance at YAC events, Alumni Association events, and on campus. Membership may remain in jeopardy should a member not meet these requirements. Every new council member is given a three (3) year term limit. Members will be eligible for a second term only by reelection of the YAC. A special application will be made available to those members who are terming out and wish to run for a second three (3) year term. Total years on the YAC shall not exceed six (6) years.
Meetings of the YAC are held the second Wednesday of September, November, January, March, and May from 5:30 - 8 p.m. Meeting locations rotate between the Allendale and Pew campuses. The annual retreat is held in August. Meetings dates are subject to change.
The Council is made up of three (3) committees: Activities, Engagement, and Governance. Each member is required to serve on one of the three committees, in addition to serving their time on the YAC.
Activities Committee will collaborate with Alumni Relations staff to plan and host all YAC sponsored events.
Engagement Committee will coordinate with Alumni Relations staff in outreach and to current students and young alumni.
Governance Committee will oversee the compliance of the YAC Bylaws and professional development.
