Nursing-RN to BSN

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.)

Undergraduate Major

Online (?) • 128 Credits

For many registered nurses (RNs) with associate degrees, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) affords additional career opportunities, advancements, and a broader scope of practice.

Overview

The Kirkhof College of Nursing's fully online RN to BSN program offers both synchronous and asynchronous coursework, with small class sizes ensuring meaningful engagement with professors and fellow students. Faculty and academic advisors guide students through every step of the program to ensure their individual needs are being met.

Ideal for RNs at any career stage, the curriculum builds upon a foundation of the arts, sciences, and humanities to expand and deepen the R.N.'s current knowledge. Classes include content on research, evidence-based practice, quality and safety, professional identity formation, informatics, emergency preparedness, leadership, and community and population health nursing.

Graduates are equipped to positively influence healthcare delivery through their acquired knowledge, skills, and abilities. Individual program plans are developed with the help of academic advisors, and clinical experiences are coordinated by a full-time clinical placement coordinator. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, ensuring a high standard of education.

*Students must be licensed RNs in their state of residency to begin NUR 400-level courses. GVSU awards up to 32 credits for unencumbered RN licensure. Additional information can be found here.

Admission Information

  • You must apply to Grand Valley State University (GVSU) for admission as a degree-seeking student. Upon admission to GVSU you must participate in Transfer Student Advising and Registration and declare nursing as your major. Secondary application is required for the RN to B.S.N. program within the Kirkhof College of Nursing.
  • To be admitted to the RN to B.S.N. program a prospective student must have earned an overall GPA of 3.0 or have earned a 3.0 GPA within their last 15 credits. In addition, a student must demonstrate completion of the required prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of C (2.0).

Prior to beginning the NUR 400-level courses:

  • Students must complete comprehensive health compliance requirements including, but not limited to, a criminal background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening. Clinical sites can refuse to accept students who have not successfully completed all GVSU health requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to establish and maintain all compliance requirements. Please note: If there is illegal activity in the background check/fingerprinting or if there is evidence of one or more prohibited substance(s) in the drug test, the clinical sites have the right to refuse a students placement which may negatively impact a students ability to progress in the BSN program and subsequently graduate.
  • Students must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in their state of residency before beginning the senior nursing sequence. The students RN licensure must remain unencumbered while enrolled in the RN to B.S.N. program.
