The intercultural communications certificate prepares you with skills in effective communication that support diversity, inclusion, belonging, and international awareness across a wide range of job sectors, industries, and organizations.

Overview

Grand Valley's Intercultural Communications Undergraduate Certificate prepares students with skills in effective communication that support diversity, inclusion, belonging, and international awareness across various job sectors, industries, and organizations. The certificate can be completed in one year or less and is available in multiple formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, low residency, and online, making it accessible and flexible for students.

The coursework for the Intercultural Communications certificate requires 14 credits. Core courses include:

  • Introduction to intercultural competence.
  • Writing in the global context.
  • A practicum in intercultural learning.
  • Choose electives from categories such as media, modes, and methods, and theory into practice, covering topics like intercultural communications, digital literacies, communication ethics, digital crime, and business communication. 

This certificate equips students with effective communication skills applicable in various workplace, digital, and societal settings. The program allows students to create stackable credentials that enhance their degrees and bolster their resumes. The flexibility of completing the certificate in one year or less, along with the support from dedicated faculty, ensures students can balance their studies with other commitments while gaining valuable intercultural competencies.

Admission Information

For new students, visit the Admissions website for undergraduate requirements. Upon acceptance and for current students:

  • Declare your certificate via myBanner (Login to Banner Self-Service, click on Student, Student Records, Add a Certificate or Badge to your Program, Select the appropriate certificate from the drop down list, and click Submit)
  • Speak with the appropriate certificate coordinator to ensure criteria are being met (you will be able to track your progress toward the certificate in myPath as well!)
  • Once you are done with the requirements, apply to receive the certificate via myBanner.
  • Once the completion of your certificate has been verified, the certificate will be posted to your student record and will be viewable on your transcript.

Hands-On Experience

A required practicum gives students realworld experience applying intercultural communication skills in workplace, community, or global contexts.

Interdisciplinary Elective Options

Students choose electives from categories such as:
  • Media, modes, and methods
  • Theory into practice
  • Topics include digital literacies, communication ethics, digital crime, business communication, and more.
This allows students to tailor the certificate to their career goals.
