• 33 CreditsThis program prepares educators to effectively teach students with autism spectrum disorder in a variety of settings and to effectively manage the classroom by developing the ability to adjust their teaching practices according to the needs of the student.
Grand Valley's Master of Education, M.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder is national recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children and is designed to prepare educators for specialized roles in supporting students with autism. It aims to equip educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance the academic and personal potential of students with autism.
This program's curriculum includes a variety of courses that cover both foundational and specialized topics in special education. Students will study courses such as educational policy and practice, social and cultural foundations of education, and educational inquiry and evaluation. Specific to autism spectrum disorder, the program includes courses like introduction to autism spectrum disorder, behavior support for students with autism, educational assessment and interventions for autism, language and communication assessment and instruction for autism, and collaboration in special education. Additionally, practical field experiences and a capstone project or thesis are integral parts of the program, ensuring that students gain hands-on experience.
Grand Valley's M.Ed. in Special Education is taught by experienced faculty who are leaders in education and passionate about teaching. They provide valuable insights and are there to support you throughout the program. Classes are offered in the evening, on weekends, during the spring/summer semester, and online, making attending class easier for full-time educators.

Application Deadline
Deadline for fall semester is July 15; winter, November 15; spring/summer, March 15. Early application is strongly encouraged to secure course enrollment. Those applications received after the deadline will be considered on an individual basis and program availability. Late applicants should contact interim program director Barbara Lubic, [email protected]. The $30 nonrefundable application fee is waived if you have previously applied to GVSU.
