Special education is instruction designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate educational opportunities and support.

Overview

Grand Valley's Master of Education, M.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis on Cognitive Impairment prepares educators for specialized roles in supporting students with cognitive impairments. The program equips educators with the skills to enhance the academic and personal potential of students with cognitive impairments.

The curriculum includes courses such as educational policy and practice, social and cultural foundations of education, and educational inquiry and evaluation. Specific to cognitive impairment, students will study understanding students with cognitive impairment, educational interventions for mild and severe cognitive impairment, and assessment for placement and program. Practical field experiences and a capstone project or thesis ensure hands-on experience.

Grand Valley's M.Ed. in Special Education is taught by experienced faculty who are leaders in education and passionate about teaching. They provide valuable insights and are there to support you throughout the program. Classes are offered in the evening, on weekends, during the spring/summer semester, and online, making attending class easier for full-time educators.

This program does not lead to initial teacher certification. Please see the Graduate Teacher Certification (GTC) program if you are seeking initial teacher certification at the graduate level.
