Department Hiring Visiting Faculty in First-Year Writing

Visiting Faculty of Writing. The Department of Writing at Grand Valley State University seeks to fill multiple full-time (9-month) Visiting Faculty positions to begin August 6, 2024. The ideal candidates will have experience teaching general education first-year writing courses and be interested in continuously developing their professional expertise as writing instructors. An PhD, MFA, or MA in Rhetoric/Composition, Writing, English, or closely related field is required by time of employment, and graduate coursework in rhetoric and composition is desired. Candidates need to have expertise and experience in teaching college composition; strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility; creativity and flexibility; and interest in social justice education, inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

Grand Valley State University offers a unique curricular structure for first-year writing that centers on collaborative portfolio grading and working with imbedded writing center consultants; successful candidates will demonstrate interest in and/or experience with these pedagogical strategies. The typical teaching load is 12-credit hours per semester. This is a one year, non-tenure track position, with the possibility of renewal up to three years depending on funding and need. This position is designed for candidates planning to seek permanent positions elsewhere. To help Visiting Faculty in their continuing job searches, we provide mentoring, research and conference travel support, and performance reviews.
