March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and leadership of women throughout history and in our communities today. In the United States, Women’s History Month has been officially recognized since 1987 and honors the lasting impact women have made in shaping society, culture, science, education, and public life.

This month provides an opportunity to reflect on progress toward gender equity, learn about influential women across disciplines, and support initiatives that advance opportunity and inclusion.


This Year's Theme

Each year, the National Women's History Alliance selects a theme highlighting women’s impact and leadership. The theme celebrates the ways women educate, inspire, and shape future generations through leadership, mentorship, and innovation. This year's theme is:

Why Women's History Month Matters

Women’s History Month recognizes the often-overlooked contributions of women throughout history and highlights the ongoing efforts to advance gender equity. The observance encourages communities to learn about historical achievements, celebrate contemporary leaders, and inspire future generations.

Members of the GVSU community can celebrate and learn throughout the month in many ways:

  • Support women-owned businesses and organizations

  • Share stories of women who have inspired or influenced your life and career

  • Engage in conversations about gender equity and inclusion
