Series of GVSU events to address the topic of violence against women

The Department of Visual and Media Arts is participating in a series of events to address the topic of violence against women. The events include an art installation and panel discussion with the artist Elina Chauvet, who will be visiting GVSU from Mexico.
Elina aims to communicate his political and social concerns in a variety of media including painting, performance, and installation. Violence and its different perspectives and social impact are among the topics of her practice. She believes art can be used as a social exchange generator and hopes for an equitable, non-violent society.
The GVSU community is invited to contribute in a variety of ways:
- Bring in shoes that can be included in the installation! Marked boxes to donate shoes will be available in the Atrium and around the Calder Art Center and Lake Superior Hall from now until the 18th.
- You can donate shoes and not paint them;
- You can also paint shoes and not donate them.
- The donations do not need to be women’s shoes. Men’s or children’s are welcome.
- You can take part in a “red shoe spray-painting” event hosted by students in Space Studio! This will happen on Wednesday, October 18th, from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m., using the spray hood in the CAC 1820 (foundry and metal shop). Spray paint provided.
- You can visit the installation. These painted shoes will be comprise the installation, on view on the Pew Campus (courtyard at the flags.) on Saturday, October 21st 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
- You can attend the Panel Discussion (in English) featuring GVSU professors who research addresses violence against women, and moderated by Anna Campbell. This will happen on Monday, October 23, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Loosemore Auditorium
