Events » Culture & Coffee: Navigating China

With its amazing cuisine, language, architecture, landscape, history and so on, China is attractive for not only tourists and scholars, but also businesses, especially as it keeps growing into a stronger and stronger economic entity in the 21st century. This year, 2018, marks the fortieth year of Chinese economic reform. The country has been changing rapidly for the past few decades. With the largest population in the world and its GDP (pop adjusted) growing from $1.12 trillion in 1990 to $21.42 trillion in 2016, it is undeniable that China has a direct impact on almost all economic sectors around the globe.

Although Chinese exports have slowed down in recent years, the domestic economy is holding up, as the government becomes more open to the ideas of “free trade zones” and accelerating development in high tech fields such as electric-cars and artificial intelligence. Because of its unique culture and traditions that have built up for five thousand years, businesses may encounter challenges when looking to do business in this country. Some aspects of Chinese culture are difficult for westerners to understand and simply moving offices to China, without acknowledging peculiar consumption habits will not help U.S. businesses succeed.
