Outdoor Orientation Programs
Overview
Set off on an unforgettable adventure with Recreation & Wellness on our Outdoor Orientation Programs (OOPs). These programs offer incoming students an opportunity to forge meaningful connections through outdoor activities, equipping first-year students with essential skills to successfully navigate their college experience.
Benefits of this Program include:
-
Community: This shared experience fosters lasting friendships and a supportive community that will serve students well throughout their college journey.
-
Empowered Learning: Through play and reflection, students will draw parallels with the outdoors as well as learn about opportunities and resources that will help them succeed at GVSU and beyond.
-
Early Move-In: OOPs programs start just before regular move-in/ orientation activities, allowing you to skip the crowds yet return in time to meet your roommate and attend other important campus events.
All of our programs are designed for students with little to no experience in the particular activities (hiking, paddling, biking, etc.). However, participants are expected to be healthy enough to engage in moderate physical activity for the duration of the program.
"This was the first time I've ever done something like this, and I'm so glad this was my first experience. I met some amazing people, got to explore a gorgeous new place, and learned some new skills." -2022 OA Trip Participant
OOPs Trips
Our current offerings are what we call "Basecamp" style trips. During the day we'll set off on an adventure and each evening will return back to a home base with a bed, running water and flushing toilets, making these trips great for participants who are still developing their comfort with wilderness exploration.
Registration period for all trips: Opens May 15th at 8:00am; Closes July 31st at 11:59pm

OOPs FAQs
Generally speaking, activity fees, lodging including early move-in, transportation, staffing, meals at the destination, trip leadership and pertinent group equipment
What participants must provide for themselves: Meals on the road, snacks, trip appropriate clothing, and a readiness to be active outdoors
All of our trips are designed for participants with little or no experience in the activities themselves. That said, each trip does typically require mild to moderate physical exertion. Please consult your physician if you are unsure of your ability to participate.
We can and will accommodate any restrictions to the very best of our ability but can only do so if we know about them. Filling out the Participant Information section of the registration form completely and honestly is the best place to outline your needs and accommodations. We may follow up individually for additional information, if needed. Health information is kept confidential between the participant and trip staff specific to their trip.
