PMASI -Registration & Course Offerings
General Registration
Graduate students are eligible to register for classes beginning March. Many courses fill quickly, so don’t wait too long to enroll! For general guidance on how to register for classes, refer to the Registrar's Registration Information page.
While course registration still takes place in Banner, the Registrar's course search index is available for quick queries of any course without needing to log in.
Advising
The SI Advising Guide will be useful as you're planning out your schedule. This and many other resources, including the SI Student Handbook, Internship Guide, and Master's Project info, are accessible from the SI homepage.
Reach out to your assigned faculty advisor or to Dr. Azfar Hussain ([email protected] or 616-331-8172), Director of Social Innovation, to schedule an advising meeting if you haven't done so already. Be proactive in connecting with your faculty advisor or the SI Program Director regularly throughout your time in the Social Innovation Program.
Important Change Regarding SI 690:
Beginning Fall 2022, SI 690 Social Innovation Research Design will be replaced by another research design course. Please follow up with the Graduate Program Director for more information.
Registration Override Permits
There are several situations in which a student may need to request a registration override permit to enroll in a course. Some examples include:
- Registering for application courses (any course with a prefix other than "SI"). When submitting an override request to join an application course, we recommend students include an explanation such as "I'm a graduate student in the SI Program seeking a major restriction override."
- Prerequisites for the class have not been met.
- There are no seats available because the class is full. The instructor or department may or may not grant the request to join a class that is already at capacity, though it's still worth inquiring.
- A permit is required to register for SI 661 Internship- refer to the Internship Guide for more details.
- A permit is required to register for SI 693 Master's Project, which involves the passing of SI 690 and approval of the student's SI 690 research proposal.
Follow these instructions for submitting a registration override permit.
The student will receive a confirmation email informing them whether or not the request was approved or denied by the department. If approval was granted, this does not automatically register the student in the course. Usually, the student must then manually enter the CRN in Banner to add the class to their schedule. Within Banner under “Register for Classes,” the first menu item at the top is “Find Classes;” the next menu option to the right is “Enter CRNs.” The student will go to “Enter CRNs” and then type the specific CRN to add the class to their schedule.
The Social Innovation Program, which is housed in the School of Community Leadership and Development, does not have access or authority to approve an override request submitted for a class taught in a different department (courses with a prefix other than "SI"). Specific questions about override requests for these classes should be directed to the chair, director or academic coordinator of that department. If assistance is needed to facilitate this communication, please contact the Academic Coordinator for the Social Innovation Program, Sherry Moyer at moyers@gvsu.edu or (616) 331-6576.
