Student Visa Update - July 2025
Published June 25, 2025
Four GVSU international students who previously had their international student immigration records terminated by the federal government had those records reinstated following court challenges from other similarly situated students. GVSU initially reported two students had been affected by the federal government’s actions to terminate their international student immigration records. That number had later increased to four before the terminations were reversed.
In late May, the State Department announced it would temporarily pause scheduling of new international student visas while it reviews vetting procedures related to social media.
Grand Valley has several hundred international students who have paid the fee for a student visa but have not yet had an interview. Our admissions and international student support teams are tracking developments related to the pause and the pending changes to the student visa vetting process.
Grand Valley is also working with students and prospective students who are nationals of several countries included in a recent suspension of visa issuance (referred to as a “travel ban” by some outlets) to review their options considering recent changes. The travel ban does not revoke the visas of those who had a valid visa before June 9, 2025, or impact the entry of nationals of listed countries who are lawful permanent residents or dual nationals who hold multiple passports.
