Fear smarter, not harder: The science on fear and how we can use it to help our students
Whether due to biology, society, or our own experiences, we as humans collect misguided fears. We fight anxiety when getting on a plane while remaining relatively worry-free on the car trip to the grocery store even though the car is many times more dangerous. We've experienced these misguided fears in the classroom, too. From students freezing on exams to no shows on presentations, we've seen how fear can undermine success. But fear is an everyday occurrence-- one that is both necessary and even helpful at times. Using research from my latest book on fear, we will discuss how fears, including everything from a fear of failure to imposter syndrome, can guide our students' behavior and how to help them fear smarter, not harder.
