Verification of Employment FAQs
At times throughout your employment, there may be instances when you are required to verify your wage or employment history. These instances include; securing a mortgage, buying a car, leasing or renting, or providing information to a government agency for a social service entitlement. To facilitate these transactions, GVSU has partnered with The Work Number and securely transmits information to The Work Number to fulfill wage and employment verifications.

It’s simple. If an organization needs to verify your wage or employment history, simply direct them to The Work Number at https://employees.theworknumber.com. The Work Number will then register the requestor, validate that they have your consent, as well as a permissible purpose to view your data.
The Work Number is also available to all employees, free of charge. You can generate your own verification reports and letters on demand.
The Work Number® from Equifax is a simpler and more discreet way to help get proof of your employment and income information to credentialed companies when needed. It’s available 24/7 so that you can get the decisions you need when you need them.
Without The Work Number service, a lender, property manager or pre-employment screener could call your employer and ask to check on your employment or income. Also, many verifications happen after business hours or on weekends.
Not just anyone can ask for your personal information. They have to be credentialed and have a permissible purpose to obtain the information. The Work Number service requires requestors to be credentialed verifiers, meaning they have to go through a credentialing process to prove they have a permissible purpose under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) in order to make a request and receive information.
In addition, you have to give permission for a verifier to get your income information from The Work Number database. This is called consumer consent, and it’s usually part of an application you complete, for a job, for a lease, or for credit.
Utilizing The Work Number for employment and wage verification will benefit GVSU employees in multiple ways:
- More Privacy: Your personal information is protected. With your consent, your personal data can be retrieved only by credentialed verifiers.
- Better Service: The Work Number is available to those needing your information 24 hours a day. No waiting for your lender or landlord to exchange paperwork with your employer to help close the deal.
- Consent: You authorize credentialed verifiers to retrieve your income information by signing a borrowers authorization form, an application for a benefit (such as a loan or social service request), or by creating a salary key (a onetime access code).
- Security: The Work Number database uses stringent security standards to help protect your data. There are also controls in place by law (the Fair Credit Reporting Act) to help protect your privacy.
- Accuracy: Another plus with The Work Number service is it lets you check to make sure your information is correct. The Employment Data Report (EDR) is required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) so you can see your personal information and who was provided that information.
The Work Number database is governed by the FCRA, which requires that employees be able to see who has requested their information and that you can check your data and dispute anything that may be wrong or inaccurate. You can access your Employment Data Report, a consumer report from The Work Number, by visiting https://employees.theworknumber.com/employment-data-report to learn more.
