Job Summary

This position requires a significant level of functional independence and is responsible to coordinate our course support service which also includes copyright consultation responsibilities. Responsible to supervise, schedule, and coordinate access and delivery course reserve student assistants. Flexibility to work varied shifts is required.

Essential Functions

  • Advises and consults with faculty to format course reserve content and establish appropriate rules for its use and ensures that every reserve transaction complies with copyright law through the use of the Copyright Clearance Center or by direct contact with individual publishers; monitors libraries’ copyright budget.
  • Assists and advises faculty and staff on the use of electronic reserves and locates, obtains, and makes available resources requested by faculty by searching library’s catalog, online databases or the collections of other libraries.
  • Works with the Access and Delivery Manager to communicate with library staff in providing exemplary course reserve services in all GVSU locations; providing leadership in compiling and maintaining Course Reserves Procedures Manual to standardize policy among the various library locations.
  • Stays abreast with all issues involving course support, including software, hardware, policy, process, trends and best practices.
  • Hires, trains, budgets and supervises Access and Delivery course support student employees and coordinates their work.
  • Creates bibliographic records in libraries’ online catalog allowing students to locate and access course reserve resources and creates links to reserve material in the university course management system.
  • Responsible for capturing and organizing statistical data concerning course support usage.
  • Recommendation the purchase of frequently requested items.
  • Facilitates electronic access using a suite of software and hardware to manipulate and digitize library materials and the materials owned by faculty.
  • Identify and report problems with the facilities (i.e. burned-out light bulbs, water leaks, etc.) and help reduce energy use in the building.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Responsible for assisting patrons with a wide range of transactions and inquiries related to the circulation of materials, patron accounts, library policies, reference and access, directional, and of general variety usually in a high-paced, multi-tasked physical and virtual environment.
  • Provides reference and research services requiring an in-depth knowledge of the library’s holdings, web site and online databases. Additionally, knowledge of proper reference interview technique is also needed.
  • Assist with gathering and compiling statistics in relation to the user experience program.
  • Serves as backup to oversee opening of the library.
  • Assist with energy issues by monitoring and reducing the use of lights, power and water as appropriate.
  • Inform and explain to students and staff the energy compliance measures including light dimming and under floor air distribution systems.
  • Assists with projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of four years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working in academic libraries
  • Experience with an integrated library system
  • Supervisory experience

Supervision Received

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor. Much of the work is self-initiated. Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility.

Supervision Exercised

Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
