Job Summary

The Architectural Assistant provides department project managers with technical support for graphic documentation and database management. They will also have responsibility for assigned projects.  In addition, the Architectural Assistant has primary project management responsibility for interior signage and the MISS DIG permit programs.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the preparation of specification documents for the construction, repair and alteration of university structures.
  • Prepares estimates of costs for construction, repairs and furnishings.
  • Acquaints prospective bidders with project conditions.
  • Schedules and coordinates schedules for the assigned work, including notification of affected university entities.
  • Reviews the quality and progress of work and arranges for corrections and completion.
  • Maintains records of the projects in the standard format for the facilities unit.
  • Maintains files and records of buildings for state reporting requirements.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of an electronic drawing management system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Responsible for maintaining skill level, and knowledge of developments within the field by participation in training opportunities, studying manuals, and reading journals and technical publications.
  • Hires, trains and supervises student workers as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or two-year technical degree.
  • Minimum of four years related experience.
  • Experience coordinating and prioritizing work assignments and maintaining work flow to meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet, work processing, project management and CAD software.
  • Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings, blueprints and other architectural/construction/building/utility files, drawings and documents.
  • Ability to deal weekly with vendor/contractors in implementing various projects.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a satisfactory work performance and attendance record.
  • Will be expected to perform indoor and outdoor duties, including conducting site visits during all phases of construction projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Experience in construction project management.
  • Desire to stay current with technological advances in related fields.
  • Experience in educational facilities.

Supervision Received

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor. Much of the work is self-initiated. Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility.

Supervision Exercised

Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
