Biography
Dr. Andrew Kalafut is the founding director of the Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research (ICER) at Grand Valley State University, which he established in October 2023 to advance cybersecurity research, education, and outreach across the region. Under his leadership, ICER works closely with industry partners, government agencies, and academic collaborators to promote innovative solutions in cybersecurity and to prepare students for high-demand careers in the field.
Dr. Kalafut is also an associate professor in the College of Computing, where he teaches courses in cybersecurity, information assurance, and information security principles. His research focuses on user authentication, human factors in cybersecurity, device authentication, and Internet of Things (IoT) security. He is particularly interested in exploring how usability impacts security practices, with the goal of designing more effective and user-friendly systems.
In addition to his academic and research work, Dr. Kalafut is an active member of ACM and regularly contributes to professional discussions in the cybersecurity community. He also mentors students through research projects and experiential learning opportunities within ICER.
Beyond the classroom and lab, Dr. Kalafut enjoys cultivating an impressive 7,000 square feet of garden space, maintaining freshwater aquariums, and engaging in strategic board games
