Alumni educators return to GVSU to help students prepare for their teaching careers

More than 170 undergraduate Education pre-service students gathered Wednesday, March 18th, in the Seidman Forum to connect with local alumni administrators and prepare for the job search ahead. Superintendents, principals, and HR representatives from across the region met with soon-to-be graduates to share insights on hiring and expectations for new teachers. Hosted by the Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) since 2003, the event is now required for students in their final semester in the College of Education and Community Innovation.

The evening began with dinner and informal networking, followed by remarks from CEP Director Clay Pelon, who recognized campus partners and reflected on the event’s growth over the past two decades. Attendees then participated in small-group roundtables led by the visiting administrators, where students could show their resumes and cover letters for review and ask direct questions about the realities of the field.

A panel of returning alumni administrators closed the event, offering candid perspectives on what the teaching professional looks like now and answering thoughtful questions from the Education Alumni Network Chair, Emily Miller (Allendale Public Schools). The good humor and practical approach of these panelists gave students at the event a chance to hear what they can really expect from the hiring process, and was especially insightful as representatives from urban, rural, and suburban areas shared their expectations for prospective hires.

Overall, the event served as a strong bridge between preparation and practice for young professionals soon to receive their teaching certificate. Pelon has seen this event in fall and winter semesters become a valuable moment for students.  Attendees left with notated CVs and new connections, equipped with increased confidence as they enter the job market.
