Our History

The College of Community and Public Service (CCPS) was established in 2004. Its five preexisting units had strong community connections and a professional focus. The first CCPS Dean was Dr. Rodney Mulder, who had been Dean of the School of Social Work. In 2008, Dean Mulder was succeeded by Dr. George Grant, Jr.

During Dr. Grant's tenure, CCPS grew into a truly engaged college, offering the most community-based learning courses of any college at GVSU. In December 2020, Dr. Grant accepted a position as chancellor of Penn State Berks.  Dr. Paul Stansbie who is an associate dean within CCPS is now CCPS’s acting dean.

In Fall 2021, CCPS will merge with the College of Education.
