Sustainability Month at GVSU Recognized with Events Across Campus

Throughout the month of October, Grand Valley will celebrate Sustainability Month with several events.
Sustainable practices are a high priority at the university, with the university consistently being recognized nationally for our efforts.
Grand Valley recently was named in the top 40 'cool schools' in the U.S. by the Sierra Club, the university's highest ranking on this list to date.
"This designation highlights the university’s commitment to sustainability," said Yumiko Jakobcic, director of the Office of Sustainability Practices. "Seeing our score increase each year is a testament to all of the amazing people we have across the campuses. There are so many people who are passionate about sustainability and work to keep pushing us further."
The Office of Sustainability Practices will be hosting a photo challenge for the campus community each week in October. Those who snap a photo of the week's theme will have a chance to win prizes, while also engaging with sustainable practices. Stock up on fresh foods and support local farmers by stopping by the Farm Stand at the Cook Carillon Tower on Wednesdays throughout the month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. On October 6, Daddy's Dough Cookies and Mosby's Popcorn will also be joining the stand.
The GVSU Farm club will host a Harvest Party at the Sustainable Agriculture Project on October 8 from 1-8 p.m. Attendees can choose to volunteer on the farm until 4 p.m., then can enjoy food, yard games and more.
For those looking to be more sustainable in their clothing use, a repair clinic will be held on October 19, where apparel, backpacks and more can be repaired for free by faculty, staff and other volunteers.
Outdoor Adventures will be hosting a backpacking trip to Manistee River Trail on October 25-26. Registration is $65 per person and includes transportation, camping, dinner and any technical gear that is needed.
To complete the month's events, the Community Service Learning Center has partnered with Blandford Nature Center for a service project on October 29 from 12-2 p.m.
