Faculty and Staff Successes, February 2015

Gamal Gasim, Assistant Professor of  Middle East Studies and Political Science, wrote three articles: “Is a Military Coup d’état imminent in Yemen?” published on the Arab Daily News website and “Analysis: What went wrong in Yemen?” and “Yemen Coup: What Happens Now?” published on the Al Jazeera Media Network website. 

Coeli Fitzpatrick, Associate Professor in Honors and Middle East Studies wrote a book, Muhammad in History, Thought, and Culture: An Encyclopedia of the Prophet of God that received the 2015 ALA-RUSA Outstanding Reference Source award.

Danielle Lake, Assistant Professor of Liberal Studies, was appointed to the Engaged Department Initiative Research Team through the Office for Community Engagement.

Marilyn Preston, Assistant Professor of Liberal Studies, wrote an article, “Traditionally Heterogendered Institutions: Discourses Surrounding LGBTQ College Students,” published in the Journal of LGBT Youth.

David Stark, Professor in the History Department and Coordinator of Latin American Studies, wrote a book, Slave Families and the Hato Economy in Puerto Rico, that was published by the University Press of Florida 

Troy VanKoevering, Office Coordinator in the Padnos International Center, wrote a story, “The Himalayan,” which will be published as a finalist in the 2015 Write Michigan Anthology. 

The following faculty and staff presented at the Community As Classroom Partner Showcase on January 30:

  • "The Hunger Games: Tackling Wicked Food Problems at Black River Public School through a New, Experiential Project Term Course"; presented by Danielle Lake, Assistant Professor of Liberal Studies; Anne Marie Fauvel, Affiliate Professor of Liberal Studies; and Tona Ambrose, Charter Schools Office Project Coordinator.

  • "Portrait of My Community: A Collaborative Youth Leadership Initiative"; presented by Melanie Shell-Weiss, Assistant Professor of Liberal Studies and Director of the Kutsche Office of Local History; Courtney Sherwood, Office Coordinator for the Kutsche Office of Local History; Melissa Baker-Boosamara, Community Service Learning Center Coordinator; Paul Wittenbraker, Associate Professor of Art and Design; and Joel Wendland, Assistant Professor of Liberal Studies.

  • "Liberal Studies Accelerated Leadership Program and Challenge Scholars Program"; presented by Judy Whipps, Professor of Liberal Studies; Justin Pettibone, Affiliate Professor of Liberal Studies; Erica Curry Van Ee, Adjunct Professor of Public Administration; and Danielle Lake, Assistant Professor of Liberal Studies.

  • "Developing a Self-Sustaining Neighborhood: Empowering Residents and Improving Decision Making through Community Partnerships"; presented by Norman Christopher, Director of the Office of Sustainability Practices; Cynthia McCurren, Dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing; Elaine Collins, Dean of the College of Education; and Anne Hiskes, Dean of the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies.
