The Young Alumni Award is presented to a recent graduate who is making outstanding contributions to society and whose accomplishments and career reflect favorably upon themselves, their community and Grand Valley.

Ashley Melton, founder and executive director of Parenting Pathways, dreamed of a community for parents rooted in healing, education and hope. A 2024 GVSU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in health information management, Melton is fueled by the belief that a parent’s mental health can shape a child’s emotional development.

“I realized that so many cycles of struggle and trauma could be broken if parents just had the right support emotionally and mentally, and within the community,” Melton said. “That thought lit something in me; and even when it didn’t make sense on paper, it made sense in my soul.”

Rather than separating the needs of parents and children, Parenting Pathways focuses on those connections. Through workshops and resource guides, Parenting Pathways helps parents strengthen communication, build emotional resilience and connect with local support networks.

Alongside her nonprofit work, Melton serves as a health information management technician at Trinity Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, where she supports patient documentation, care coordination and quality processes. “What I enjoy most about my role is community engagement and building relationships,” Melton said. “I also enjoy continuing to learn. Every day, I learn new ways to help other people.”

She also gives back through board service with LeadHership Impact, an after-school program serving girls of color, and Young Nonprofit Professionals of Grand Rapids, where she supports programming and outreach for emerging nonprofit leaders.

Even in the early years of her career, Melton’s leadership has already stretched across the Grand Rapids community. She has launched multiple sessions of Parenting Pathways programming, represented her organization during Tech Week Grand Rapids and was nominated for the Community Advocate Award presented by the Grand Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce.

“I am most proud of the impact my team and I have been able to make so far,” Melton said. “The families that we connect with and the feedback we receive make everything worth it.”

Melton’s story reflects the heart of the Young Alumni Award: a recent graduate using her education, passion and persistence to serve others. Through Parenting Pathways and her community involvement, she is helping families find hope and showing what it means to carry Grand Valley’s values into the world. 

“Attending Grand Valley was the best decision I could have made for myself,” Melton said. “If I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.”
