Advice from Parents / Supporters

Thank you to members of the GVSU Parents facebook group for contributing to this list of helpful thoughts and advice!

"I saw a video about student orgs at my first Laker's Orientation, that was very instrumental in my daughter and later my son founding a club that is now thriving!"

"There are lots of groups and organizations that are not just Greek life and athletics."

"I know it sounds silly, but [learn about] the parking spots that are right in front of the buildings for quick pick ups and drop offs. I know we use them during move-in, but I didn't realize that we were able to still use those spots during the school year as well."

"Parking on campus as a parent was very confusing at first. Finally I figured out that parents can get free permits for different places and times from Parking Services. Just stop in at the front (north) end of the Allendale campus when you arrive."

"Ensure that [your] student knows to go to their advisor and use myPath so they understand what [classes] they need to take each semester. My now-graduated son had a great experience with his BMS advisor, but students can also guide themselves with myPath. Also, all incoming Lakers [should be] aware of the Student Success Center so they know they have tools available if classes get a bit spicy and they need some support."

"Tell your Laker to be tenacious and see their advisor often. Make sure their plan of study is on track and accurate."

"Think about a minor early. If you do, you can take general ed courses in the minor and 'double dip' [to meet both gen ed requirements and minor requirements]. Minors can set you apart in the long run and help you find your people on campus."

"[Encourage your student] to advocate for themselves!"

"I felt they did a very nice job [at Orientation] covering safety, FERPA, bills, and more..."

We encourage all students, parents and supporters to visit the Guardian/Family Access and Guardian/Family Access FAQs pages to learn more about granting access for parents/supporters to student records. Students are able to grant proxy access to make secure tuition payments, view grades and tax information, and other options through Guardian/Family Access.

"Make sure to tell parents/students if they took college classes in high school [to] have a current [official] transcript from that college sent to GV." Students can transfer in credits that meet course requirements and potentially save time and money in pursuit of their degree.

"[Emphasize] the importance for freshman to know that in their first fall semester housing applications for the next year will open."

"If the dorm doesn't have A/C... window box fans help with the heat in the evening!"
