interests, including academic, creative, and professional writing.
Students have the flexibility to tailor their major to align with
their professional and educational goals, and they are required to
complete an internship to gain practical experience. The program
emphasizes the importance of effective communication and critical
thinking, preparing students for diverse careers in writing, editing,
publishing, and more.
Coursework covers a wide range of topics,
including creative nonfiction, document design, fiction, magazine
writing, writing for global and local users, poetry, professional
writing, web writing, and writing with digital tools.
As one of
the few independent undergraduate writing programs in the country, it
uniquely focuses on professional and technical writing, incorporating
the latest technologies for print and web environments. You can engage
in extracurricular activities like contributing to a student-run
literary journal, participating in a visiting writer series, joining a
student reading series, and traveling to writing conferences.
Additionally, the Distinction in Writing program encourages excellence
beyond the classroom, expanding your craft and professional growth.
The writing major immerses you in a collaborative and creative
community, helping you become a critical reader, careful thinker, and
