Medical Dosimetry

Master of Science (M.S.)

Graduate Major

Grand Rapids • Low Residency (?) • 38 Credits

Medical dosimetry involves creating precise radiation treatment plans for cancer patients, ensuring the accurate delivery of radiation doses to target tumors while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues.

Overview

Grand Valley's Master of Science (M.S.) in Medical Dosimetry program is a JRCERT accredited, 12-month hybrid/online program designed to provide comprehensive didactic and clinical education. Students complete the program through clinical placements across the U.S. and are required to attend one on-site meeting at GVSU. The program is unique in Michigan and one of only six graduate medical dosimetry programs in the nation, offering a low residency format that combines online coursework with in-person clinical experiences.

The curriculum covers a range of topics essential for a career in medical dosimetry. Students will study computer technology, clinical disease processes, human anatomy, and radiation physics. The program’s 38-credit hour didactic and clinical curriculum meets the requirements set by the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists, ensuring that graduates are eligible to sit for the MDCB examination to become Certified Medical Dosimetrists (CMD).

The program provides strong clinical education with over 1200 clinical hours, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for their careers. GVSU’s state-of-the-art treatment planning lab, available both on-campus and remotely, enhances the learning experience. Additionally, the program offers a part-time option for working radiation therapists and allows prior work experience in medical dosimetry to be converted into college credit.

The GVSU Medical Dosimetry program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The program will adhere to JRCERT standards.

Built for Working Professionals

Grand Valley's program is low-residency, which means it blends online and face-to-face learning. Clinical education courses are held at clinical radiation oncology centers, and most courses are online with one on-site meeting at the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences in downtown Grand Rapids.
