This badge is designed to give you the skills required to brew, bottle, and assess beer while learning to safely produce and serve your product. You will learn the history of brewing, the characteristics of major Western beer styles, the health benefits of beer, and how to identify off-flavors and tastes.

Overview

Grand Valley's Homebrewing Beer badge program provides students with the skills to brew, bottle, and assess beer while learning safe production and serving practices. This face-to-face program is open to both degree and non-degree-seeking students, offering flexibility and accessibility.

The coursework covers:

  • The history of brewing.
  • Characteristics of major Western beer styles.
  • Health benefits of beer.
  • Identifying off-flavors and tastes. 

Studying Homebrewing Beer at Grand Valley is advantageous because it offers practical brewing experience, knowledge of beer history and health benefits, and the opportunity to enter brewing competitions. The badge enhances one's resume with recognized credentials, providing a competitive edge in the brewing industry.

Anyone admitted to Grand Valley as a degree-seeking or a nondegree-seeking learner may complete this badge.

Admission Information

Admissions to complete a digital badge is open to both degree and nondegree-seeking students. If you are not currently a Grand Valley student, start your application here.   

For current GVSU students:

  • Declare your badge via myBanner. Login to Banner Self-Service, click on Student, Student Records, Add a Certificate or Badge to your Program, Select the appropriate badge from the drop-down list, and click Submit.
  • Speak with the appropriate badge coordinator to ensure criteria are being met. You will be able to track your progress toward the badge in myPath as well!
  • Once you are done with the requirements, apply to receive the badge via myBanner.
  • Once the completion of your badge has been verified, the badge will be posted to your student record and will be viewable on your transcript. In addition, your digital badge will be posted on Credly.com.
