Health Information Management (HIM) professionals ensure health data is meticulously organized, accurate, accessible, and secure. A career in HIM requires a diverse skill set, including sharp analytical abilities, keen attention to detail, clear communication, adept problem-solving, critical thinking, and proficiency in technology and leadership. Grand Valley's HIM program also provides students with a built-in health care information systems minor through the College of Computing.
You will delve into a diverse array of topics, including ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding, electronic health record software, and data analytics. You will also explore health care law, quality in health care, leadership practices, and strategic planning. Hands-on learning and other fieldwork not only deepen your mastery of your discipline but also give you the edge employers seek.
Studying Health Information Management at Grand Valley offers unique advantages, including being the only baccalaureate program in Michigan with a built-in minor in health care information systems. The program is accredited by CAHIIM, ensuring a high-quality education. You will be in smaller classes with hybrid learning, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard software, and can sit for the RHIA certification exam before graduation, enabling immediate certification.
The HIM program is a secondary admission program. The admissions process will take place winter semester and will require an HIM application by March 1, prior to the intended fall entry. The minimum criteria for application includes:

Admissions and Recruitment Office
Analyze science, engineering, business, and other data processing problems to develop and implement solutions to complex applications problems, system administration issues, or network concerns. Perform systems management and integration functions, improve existing computer systems, and review computer system capabilities, workflow, and schedule limitations. May analyze or recommend commercially available software.
