Special education is instruction designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate educational opportunities and support.

Overview

Grand Valley's Master of Education in Special Education with an emphasis on Learning Disabilities prepares educators to support students with learning disabilities and equips them with the skills to enhance their academic and personal potential.

The curriculum includes courses such as educational policy and practice, social and cultural foundations of education, and educational inquiry and evaluation. Specific to learning disabilities, students will study inclusive practices, diagnostic and interpretative procedures, explicit language instruction, and instructional practices for learning disabilities. Practical field experiences and a capstone project or thesis ensure hands-on experience.

Grand Valley's M.Ed. in Special Education is taught by experienced faculty who are leaders in education and passionate about teaching. They provide valuable insights and are there to support you throughout the program. Classes are offered in the evening, on weekends, during the spring/summer semester, and online, making attending class easier for full-time educators. Grand Valley's M.Ed. in Special Education is nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

This program does not lead to initial teacher certification. Please see the Graduate Teacher Certification (GTC) program if you are seeking initial teacher certification at the graduate level.

Application Deadline

Deadline for fall semester is July 15; winter, November 15; spring/summer, March 15. Early application is strongly encouraged to secure course enrollment. Those applications received after the deadline will be considered on an individual basis and program availability.
