Earth science is the comprehensive study of the Earth and its neighboring planets, exploring and understanding planet structure, processes, and history.

Overview

The Earth science program at Grand Valley State University offers integrated classroom learning with field and laboratory experiences. This program is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of geologic principles, environmental systems, and the methods used to study the Earth. Students learn the skills needed to analyze geological data, conduct research, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, preparing them for careers in education, environmental consulting, and various geoscience fields.

You will take courses covering geology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Core courses include Earth history, geomorphology, oceanography, and weather and climate. Advanced courses and electives allow specialization in areas of your interest, such as mineralogy, petrology, and environmental geology. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, with opportunities for field studies, laboratory work, and research projects that enhance your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

The program boasts experienced faculty dedicated to student success and actively involved in research. You will use state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and participate in field studies that provide invaluable real-world experience.
