Visual Artist James McAnally to visit GVSU

The Department of Visual and Media Arts welcomes visiting artist James McAnally on March 26th and 27th for two discussions and an artist talk. All events are Free, Open to the public, and approved for LIB100.
James McAnally is a writer, editor, curator and artist based in St.
Louis, MO. Foregrounding the prefigurative possibilities of the
institution, the futures and histories of artist-centric practices,
and the figure of the critic-as-strategist in the midst of our
unfurling/unending political crises, his eclectic output takes the
form of publications, exhibitions, ephemeral actions, site-conditional
criticism, and theory.
On March 26, at 1:40 p.m., 1718 Calder, James McAnally provides
an informal introduction to his work in the Visual Arts, which
includes artist, curator, collaborator, organizer, writer, editor, and
theorist. He is a co-founder and curator of The Luminary and a part of
the artist collaborative US English. He is a recipient of the Creative
Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Award for Short-Form Writing.
McAnally is a founding member of national network of independent arts
organizations, Common Field, as well as co-founder and editor of
Temporary Art Review.
Later in the same day, at 3:00 p.m., room 1201 Calder Arts
Center, you are welcome to attend "The Role of Writing and
Criticism in the Development of Culture". This will be a
roundtable discussion with James McAnally on the role of writing and
criticism in the development of culture. McAnally is editor and
co-founder of the Temporary Art Review, an online platform for
contemporary art criticism that focuses on alternative spaces and
critical exchange among disparate art communities. TAR is an
international network, highlighting both practical and theoretical
discourse through reviews, interviews, essays and profiles on
artist-centered spaces and projects.
On March 27th, 1:30 p.m., McAnally presents Producing and
Presenting Art in the Midwest: Opportunities and Challenges. This
discussion will step out of the Calder Arts Center walls and be held
at the Avenue for the Arts’ Learning Lab, located at 307 South
Division Avenue, downtown Grand Rapids. This will be a roundtable
discussion regarding the opportunities and challenges of producing and
presenting art in the Midwest. In addition, we will look at art in
social and political contexts and address the role of culture in
social change.
James McAnally is a founding member of Common Field, a national
network of independent arts organizations, as well as co-founder and
editor of Temporary Art Review and co-founder of the Luminary. A
series of essays by McAnally on St. Louis is currently being published
in Art in America.
These events are presented by the visiting artist committee of
the GVSU Visual and Media Arts Department, and are co-sponsored by
CulturedGR, the GVSU Writing Department, GVSU Digital Studies, and
Dwelling Place (Avenue for the Arts).
