Michigan Student Voting Summit Goes Virtual

July 06, 2020

This year’s Michigan Student Voting Summit drew in 180 students from 43 campuses all over Michigan, and the event was also attended by Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garland Gilchrest and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. GVSU assisted in planning this event that allowed participants to share their thoughts about civic engagement. There were discussions about encouraging more students to vote, preparing for the 2020 election, and how we can create a diverse campus coalition.

GVSU Associate Director of Student Life Melissa Baker-Boosamra says she was impressed by the “student leaders working hard to make sure that student voices are heard.” She was also excited about the “great success” and “awesome energy” of the event, despite having to make last minute changes to the format.

This is the second year Grand Valley has helped plan the Michigan Student Voting Summit. The Michigan Student Voting Summit aims to increase student voting participation on college campuses across Michigan.
